CHICAGO NEW MEDIA SUMMITBecoming The New Media Capital of the World and Winning Olympic gold for Chicago by Christine Purse John Patterson is a man on a mission, and he’s mobilized a vibrant community to help make that mission into a viable opportunity for Chicago. In June, Patterson announced the founding of The Chicago New Media Summit, a high profile thought-leader incubator for new media projects and content that identifies Chicago as the New Media Capital of the World. Embraced by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and other key leaders, the annual Summit plays an integral role in successfully implementing the new media infrastructure needed to win the 2016 Olympic bid. The CNMS team has ramped up information and events up as the Summit builds community (both on line and physical networking have supported its growth,) and encourages the unbridled creative thought and technical innovation that create key areas of opportunity. When Patterson Founded CNMS, it wasn’t the first time he’d undertaken a challenge create an “identity” for a city. Currently Director of Business Development for Pixel Brothers, earlier in his career, Patterson conceived and led a citywide leadership council that declared Austin, TX as The Arts Capitol of the South. In Texas, he seized a conceptual opportunity and instigated pioneers from the City Council, museums, galleries and the famed SXSW to transform Austin into what it is today. Patterson sees an even greater opportunity in Chicago. "Chicago is a world class city with world class talent, but it is not perceived as a place where such a profound transformation might occur. Yet, when you take a close look at this city, it’s a natural. There’s technical infrastructure and a legacy of amazing creativity and commerce. The vibrant creative and technical communities here are engaged and active. As a new paradigm for collaboration emerges, there is a real opportunity for commercial and human connection and Chicago is poised to be at the center of that new model. The summit is a unique opportunity to claim the global stage as the hub of new technology, art, television, film, theater, activism and more." The Chicago New Media Summit will take place on September 15th and 16th at The Museum of Contemporary Art and brings together the most innovative and influential individuals from Tech, Entertainment, Advertising, Journalism, Mobile, and Venture Capital for two days of talks, presentations and performances about the intersection of technology, entertainment, advertising, activism, and more. Open to the public, the event will be taped in HD and will be made available on the internet and in other new media applications during and after the event.
