VariCamp 2.0 Curriculum

The VariCamp  takes you through Panasonic’s Varicam cameras and the P2 VariCam (2700 & 3700) including the 4:4:4 capabilities of the 3700.  Working in both tape (classic Varicam)  and P2 Tapeless mode and an AVC-Intra primer.  Expert instructors and industry professionals move through camera operations, functionalities, and what you need to ensure your camera works whether you’re in a fully-equipped studio, or out in the wilds. You’ll learn the menus and participate in highly-interactive labs on color, density and motion; You’ll learn how to organize your gear, and set up the camera for your own particular requirements.

This extraordinarily full three days includes a remote shoot, talks from industry experts, and an opportunity to talk to representatives from supporting industries, including Fujinon, Panasonic, Leader, IDX and Telecast.

Day 1

  • Brief history of Digital Video
  • What is HD, What is not?
  • Why VariCam? ; why new P2 Varicam?

11:10      IDX: Power in the Field  

11:35      Prepping your gear
How to set up your camera in the field: complete with tips and tricks from the field so you can be sure to weather any storm.

  • Weather
  • Production type
  • Viewfinder set-up
  • Backfocus, normal and with Schneider collimator
  • Basic start-up checklist
  • Rental/owner operator/Video production

1:00-2:00      Lunch

2:00    Fujinon – HD lenses
           
2:30    Monitors, theory and operation
            Introduction to monitor set-up and calibration.
            An introduction to Waveform Monitors and Vectorscopes.

2:45    Introduction to Density
            What is density in video terms?
            What is gamma, pedestal, knee?
            What controls do I have over density?
                       
3:15    Density Lab

Labs will commence with an introduction to concepts, and continue by moving into a hands-on practical scenario demonstrating the various tonal control tools available in the cameras.

  • Setting up your Waveform Monitor
  • Setting up your Studio Monitor
  • Test saw
  • Pedestal, Black Stretch, Gamma, Knee Point and Slope
  • Film Rec/ Video Rec vs New Gamma modes in 2700
  • Using the paint box : EC3 & RC10

            What is Color Gamut? Color Space?
            Color Camera Response?

1:30    Color Lab

Labs will commence with an introduction to concepts, and continue by moving into a hands-on practical scenario demonstrating the various Color control tools available in the cameras.

  • Setting up your Vectorscope
  • Matching the camera to a standard
  • DSC charts
  • Matrix and color correction
  • Aberration control: white shading, flare compensation
  • Using color correction to create looks
  • Matching the camera to your eye, scene and monitor
  • CRT color temp vs. lighting temp
  • colors on set vs. colors on scope

4:45      Shooting with Telecast Fiber / Jim Hurwitz

We set up the camera at a remote location, and show how you can manipulate color and density remotely. You’ll get a chance to color correct and solve all kinds of problems remotely.

Labs will commence with an introduction to concepts, and continue by moving into a hands-on practical scenario demonstrating the various Motion control tools available in the cameras.

1:00      Camera Matching.

We’ll show you how to set up cameras for a multi-camera shoot. How to mix and match different cameras on the same shoot : HDX-900, Varicam (classic), P2 Varicam.

2:30      Your Camera and New Technologies
     
There are many ways to bring legacy cameras into the cutting edge of recording technology. This module will cover:

  • Making your existing Varicam a Solid State, 10bit Recording device
  • Recording P2 and HD Tape simultaneously with your HDX-900
  • Using the HPX-3700 to record in RGB 4:4:4
