CNMSCHICAGO NEW MEDIA SUMMIT
Becoming The New Media Capital of the World and Winning Olympic gold for Chicago

by Christine Purse

John Patterson is a man on a mission, and he’s mobilized a vibrant community to help make that mission into a viable opportunity for Chicago.  In June, Patterson announced the founding of The Chicago New Media Summit, a high profile thought-leader incubator for new media projects and content that identifies Chicago as the New Media Capital of the World. Embraced by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and other key leaders, the annual Summit plays an integral role in successfully implementing the new media infrastructure needed to win the 2016 Olympic bid. The CNMS team has ramped up information and events as the Summit builds community (both online and physical networking have supported its growth) and encourages the unbridled creative thought and technical innovation that create key areas of opportunity.

When Patterson Founded CNMS, it wasn’t the first time he’d undertaken a challenge to create an “identity” for a city. Currently, Patterson is the Director of Business Development for Pixel Brothers, but earlier in his career, he conceived and led a citywide leadership council that declared Austin, TX as The Arts Capitol of the South.  In Texas, he seized a conceptual opportunity and instigated pioneers from the City Council, museums, galleries and the famed SXSW to transform Austin into what it is today. Patterson sees an even greater opportunity in Chicago. "Chicago is a world class city with world class talent, but it is not perceived as a place where such a profound transformation might occur.  Yet, when you take a close look at this city, it’s a natural. There’s technical infrastructure and a legacy of amazing creativity and commerce.  The vibrant creative and technical communities here are engaged and active. As a new paradigm for collaboration emerges, there is a real opportunity for commercial and human connection and Chicago is poised to be at the center of that new model. The summit is a unique opportunity to claim the global stage as the hub of new technology, art, television, film, theater, activism and more."

The Chicago New Media Summit will take place on September 15th and 16th at The Museum of Contemporary Art, bringing together the most innovative and influential individuals from Tech, Entertainment, Advertising, Journalism, Mobile, and Venture Capital for two days of talks, presentations and performances about the intersection of technology, entertainment, advertising, activism, and more. Open to the public, the event will be taped in HD and  will be made available on the internet and in other new media applications during and after the event. Information about the September event and the CNMS are online now at www.chicagonewmediasummit.com.

The TAKEHOLLYWOOD Academy
at TAKEHOLLYWOOD.COM asks five questions to blockbuster director Jon Turteltaub whose credits include Instinct, Phenomenon and National Treasure I & II.

In this raw and highly entertaining interview, Mr. Turteltaub lays out the difficult and beautiful relationship between actor and director as well as truly invaluable advice for young actors about breaking into the business.

TAKEHOLLYWOOD: HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR ROLE IN THE FILMMAKING PROCESS?

JON TURTELTAUB: The question of what's my role, you know, how do I see my role in the filmmaking process? Frankly as the director I see my role as the filmmaking process. I'm supposed to be the filmmaking process. Everyone else on the film is working towards that vision, that design, that blueprint that the director is supposed to have.

Directors have a weird job. The director is both the artist and management. And the director, especially in the film, has to walk that line. The director is responsible for that budget and that schedule and is dealing with salaries and has responsibility to deliver the film for a certain amount of money and all that, but the director is also an artist. As dumb as this sounds, I see directing as being Captain Kirk on the enterprise. I remember the old Star Trek, captain Kirk knew absolutely everything about that ship and he was the one who decided where the ship was going and what was going on. And he was the one who always put his life in danger, he was the one who if Scotty needed help in the engineering bay he went down. He knew everything and the director is the same way, he has to know or she has to know everything there is to know about sound and light and wardrobe and performance and at the same time nothing else can be more important to the director than the movie. If you as the director let anything matter more to you: if you go home early cause you have some other thing to do then you are really not quiet getting done what you need to get done. That's the ugly truth, that's the bad marriage part of it. You cannot put anything ahead of making that movie or it won't be as good as it could be. More...

HPAHPA AWARDS ANNOUNCE CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION POST PRODUCTION JUDGES AWARD
On November 6th, 2008, the Hollywood Post Alliance Awards unfurl at the Skirball Center. The 2008 HPA Awards mark the third year of the popular show, which recognizes the often unsung behind the scenes contributions made by post production experts and companies who contribute invaluable talent and skill to the creative process. Thirteen award categories honor color grading, editing, audio, and compositing in movies, commercials and television shows. In addition to the craft categories, the HPA Awards honor other important contributions and developments.

The HPA has announced The Judge's Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production, a new award. Entries are sought for the honor which aims to recognize a unique project, workflow, proprietary technical development, hardware or software toolset or creative approach or achievement worthy of recognition that would not be eligible for another HPA award because it might not fit into a category or meet the eligibility requirements. Companies, groups of companies and individuals are eligible for consideration, and interested entrants should submit 1 to 2 pages explaining what their entry is and why it is worthy. The entry deadline for the Creativity and Innovation award is September 19th, and the recipient will be announced at the November 6th gala.

The HPA also announced that Dean Elizabeth Daley, Dean of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, will receive the organization's first Charles S. Swartz Award during the November 6th award show. The award honors a person, group, company or technology that has made a significant artistic, technological, business or educational impact on Post Production. The mission of this award is to recognize broad and lasting contributions that have advanced and/or provided some unique purpose to the field of Post Production. Charles S. Swartz, in whose honor the award was named, passed away in 2007. Swartz was the Executive Director and CEO of the Entertainment Technology Center at USC as well as a respected technologist, educator and producer.
